Covid and Maternal Stress - More girls may be born

"Distinguishing between the male fetal loss and reduced male conception explanations holds implications for public health. Whereas reduced male conceptions may interest basic researchers, fetal loss induces psychological, if not somatic, morbidity."

Maternal stress and anxiety during pregnancy is associated with a host of negative consequences for the fetus and subsequent development. For instance, fetal exposure to maternal stress and stress-related peptides is a risk factor for adverse outcomes on the programming of the nervous system and brain morphology of fetuses, infants, and children. Early gestational stress exposure is associated with negative outcomes at different developmental stages, slowed maturation and behavioral response patterns in fetuses, alterations in neonatal stress regulation and behavioral reactions to stress, blunted cognitive functions and emotional and behavioral problems in infants and toddlers, and reduced brain volume in areas associated with cognitive function in children. In addition, prenatal maternal stress and anxiety may be risk factors for potential negative consequences for children later in life, such as the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or lowered performance on aspects of executive function.

It is important to regulate maternal stress and provide expecting mothers with coping strategies for the inevitable stresses and changes that occur during pregnancy to increase quality of life and to maximize infant health and development.

Anthropometric measurements at 7-8, 25-26 and 36-37 weeks showed that weight gain and fat accretion were highest in pregnancies with an initial deficient body weight and lowest in pregnant women with adiposity. Correlation analysis suggested that there was a relationship between the maternal body weight, gestational weight gain and neonatal birthweights. Since women with initial deficient body weights have a wider range of weight gain, as compared with other somatic types, dietary restriction counselling should be cautious and adequate.

Pregnancy associated stress can have adverse effects on fetal development during critical periods, resulting in poor outcomes for length of gestation, fetal growth, birth weight, fetal development, and general programming of the nervous system.

PTSD is relatively common in pregnancy, varying from 4% to 6% among women at different times. In addition, it seems that the prevalence of PTSD increases from 1 to 6 months after delivery; thus, increasing awareness and continuous evaluation are important in this period.

An integrated yoga program, including asana, pranayama, and dharana, guided relaxation, and yogic theory in application to pain states, has been shown to alter cortisol levels in a sample of females with chronic pain

How to make the most of yoga during pregnancy

* Moms-to-be should focus more on stability and strength, rather than endurance and flexibility.

* Use modifications, props, or a wall to make each pose well-supported.

* Pregnancy hormones loosen your muscles and ligaments, which increases the risk for injuries if you push yourself too far in terms of flexibility. This is true even in the first trimester. Another hormone called relaxin, which is at its highest levels in the first trimester and relaxes muscles, tendons, and ligaments, also peaks in the first trimester. This laxity means you can accidentally over-stretch your joints and muscles.

Women who are more hyper-mobile may be more at risk of prolapse later on in life. Hips in particular can be vulnerable as the body ages if practice extreme yoga poses hanging in joints.

"The fetal death sex ratio in the US population may serve as a sentinel indicator of the degree to which pregnant women react to population stressors."

Research over the months post 9/11 concluded that the number of girls born healthy was significantly higher than boys. It will be very interesting to see if the morphogenic resonance of women undergoing traumatic collective stress such as the Covid disaster in the months to come will have the same outcome.

If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, or teach yoga to pregnant women I think it is vital that reducing stress is a priority.
